The 2024-25 Scott Club Concert Series will kick off on Sunday, November 17th with a delightful concert by Grand Rapids pianist, Lisa Sung. Lisa will play her jazz arrangements of children’s songs from the US, Korea, Indonesia and Vietnam and talk about her musical journey as a mom of six children, and full-time musician. She won the John Stites jazz award for her vision on visiting colonized Asian countries to perform their children’s songs with local jazz musicians, and has successfully performed in Indonesia, Korea and Hanoi in tours sponsored by John Stites.
Lisa Sung is a talented and versatile pianist, studied in both classical and jazz music. She holds a Bachelor of Jazz piano performance from Temple University, Philadelphia, performed in the top band under trumpeter Terrell Stafford. She also holds a Master of Jazz Performance from New York University and studied composition with Ron McClure, Dave Schroeder and studied jazz piano with Thomas Lawton, Don Friedman and Don Glanden. She has performed with bassist Ron McClure, drummer Jeff Brillanger, and saxophonist Patrick Wolf. She has also performed a weekly duo with bassist/vocalist Gerald Benson in Philadelphia, New Jersey, and in New York. Coming to Grand Rapids, Ms. Sung has been serving as the music director for the Calvin University Gospel Choir and teaches jazz piano at Hope College and Calvin University. Ms. Sung also has been a regular member at the Central Michigan University jazz faculty concert series.
