Sunday, November 17, 2024 at 3 pm – Lisa Sung Jazz Quartet

The 2024-25 Scott Club Concert Series will kick off on Sunday, November 17th with a delightful concert by the Lisa Sung Jazz Quartet.

Lisa will be accompanied by Rodney Whitaker (Director of Jazz Studies at Michigan State University) on bass, David Alvarez III on drums, and Andrew Bishop (Director of Jazz Studies at University of Michigan) on saxophone. The program will feature a variety of jazz arrangements, and she will narrate her musical journey with insights into the various songs throughout the concert. Ms. Sung was recognized by the John Stites Jazz Award for highest artistic development in 2022. With a tour sponsored by John Stites, she visited Indonesia, Korea, and Vietnam, performing a special program of children’s songs from each country along with local jazz musicians.

Lisa Sung is a talented and versatile pianist, studied in both classical and jazz music. She holds a Bachelor of Jazz piano performance from Temple University, Philadelphia, and performed in the top band under trumpeter Terrell Stafford. She also holds a Master of Jazz Performance from New York University and studied composition with Ron McClure and Dave Schroeder and jazz piano with Thomas Lawton, Don Friedman and Don Glanden. She has performed with bassist Ron McClure, drummer Jeff Brillanger, and saxophonist Patrick Wolf. She has also performed a weekly duo with bassist/vocalist Gerald Benson in Philadelphia, New Jersey, and New York. Coming to Grand Rapids, Ms. Sung has been serving as the music director for the Calvin University Gospel Choir and teaches jazz piano at Hope College and Calvin University. Ms. Sung also has been a regular member at the Central Michigan University jazz faculty concert series.

This concert is presented in collaboration with Foundry Hall and is supported in part by Holtec-Palisades, Michigan Arts and Culture Council, and National Endowment for the Arts.
