Based in Lancaster, South Carolina, Connor Austell is a versatile musician and educator equally at home in the performance hall and in the lecture hall. A firm believer that scholarship and musicianship go hand-in hand, Dr. Austell’s teaching philosophy holds that decisions made in musical performance should be grounded in a historical, theoretical, and pedagogical understanding of the score. In 2022, Dr. Austell’s work in researching and recording the piano compositions of Thomas “Blind Tom” Wiggins was recognized with an award by the Willson Center for Arts and Humanities at the University of Georgia. His debut album Blind Tom’s Creative Vision is available on all major streaming platforms, and his recent article on the piano works of Thomas Wiggins will appear in an upcoming edition of American Musical Perspectives.

Dr. Austell holds degrees from the University of Georgia, the University of Michigan, and Grand Valley State University, where he studied with David Fung, Arthur Greene, and Sookkyung Cho. He studied chamber music under the tutelage of Katherine Collier, Helen Marlais, and Pablo Mahave-Veglia, and has participated in masterclasses with world-class artists such as Jonathan Boss and Martin Katz. His enthusiasm for Baroque music was fostered by a study of harpsichord and organ technique with Gregory Crowell. Dr. Austell currently serves as Assistant Professor of Music at the University of South Carolina Lancaster.

This concert is presented in collaboration with Foundry Hall and is supported in part by Holtec-Palisades, Michigan Arts and Culture Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Sunday, March 3, 2024 at 3pm Cooper and Cooper Jazz

The trumpet and piano duo of Ken Cooper and Jim Cooper will perform for the first of two spring concerts on Sunday, March 3rd at the historic Scott Club. These two veteran jazz musicians have been playing together for over five years. Their hour-long concert will feature jazz standards as well as some original music and will be followed by a reception to meet the artists.

Ken Cooper is a Chicago based trumpet virtuoso, international touring musician and recording artist. He started playing with the prestigious Nisei Ambassadors Drum and Bugle Corps in 8th grade and began touring with Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions by the age of 19. Ken has performed with B. B. King, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, and members of Earth, Wind and Fire along with many other talented musicians over the years. He is mainly a jazz musician, but also plays with R&B, country and salsa bands and has recorded a CD of classical music. He is currently composing and recording his original music.

Jim Cooper, the award-winning vibraphonist, composer and educator, has been playing the vibes for over 50 years, leading numerous groups and appearing both as soloist and sideman. Cooper is not a household name among top vibraphonists, and he is something of a regional hidden treasure since he performs mostly around his local area of West Michigan. “Cooper is not just a strong soloist but an accomplished band-leader as well…he played with a degree of subtlety and craft one does not often encounter in the work of performers far better known than he.” – Chicago Tribune.

Scott Club and Foundry Hall are pleased to present the final concert of the 2023-2024 Scott Club Concert Series.

Grand Rapids pianist and singer-songwriter Caitlin Cusack will perform on Sunday May 5th at the historic South Haven Scott Club. Join us for an uplifting hour-long concert featuring Caitlin’s original music, including songs from last year’s debut release of her EP Quiet My Mind. Reception will follow concert.

Suffering a brain injury in May of 2018 while on stage in a theatrical production and then losing her mother to cancer a year later, Caitlin found herself struggling with loss, grief, and uncertainty. During a challenging recovery journey, Caitlin found solace and joy in returning to music and began songwriting to process and heal. She has since dedicated herself to sharing her songs to inspire, uplift, and encourage others to find their own light amidst the darkness. Drawing from her training in musical theatre, classical, and liturgical music, Caitlin crafts piano-driven pop songs that blend memorable melodies with poignant lyrics exploring themes of love, loss, grief, and growth.
