Roger Horton will recount his boyhood adventures with friends from days gone by and will share photos of their various escapades. Roger has been an active member of the local community for many years and is noted as the resident storyteller. Take a trip back in time and enjoy Roger’s stories of the “Boyz on Bikez”.

The South Haven Scott Club, one of South Haven’s oldest organizations, traces its origins to 1883 when it was formed as a reading circle. The organization has been providing cultural events and programs to the community ever since 1893 in its Michigan Historic Site. Come and learn about the rich history of the Scott Club from Anna Krajecki, long time member and Past-President, and enjoy a tour of this South Haven landmark.

Established in 1912, Idlewild welcomed African Americans with no restrictions at a time when segregation was rampant. The small town eventually became one of the most popular African American resorts in the Midwest. This presentation is journey back to the decades when Idlewild offered rest, relaxation, and a respite from racism. Morris O Thomas, retired Professor of Geography, Environment and Spatial Sciences at Michigan State University will present his program via Zoom. Scott Club will be open for participating in this program.

How can a story that is one of the oldest and most told in the history of humanity be mis-understood by almost everyone to be limited to only one animated cartoon which came out in 1950? Please join us to discover several of the most charming versions that are not widely known or told. Several rare versions will be told and discussed by Dr. Pamela Cook Miller, a performing member of the Jonesborough Storytellers’ Guild and founder of the Storytelling Resource Center in Jonesborough Tennessee.

What Michigan Historic Site has beautiful Austrian stained-glass windows but is not a church, counts a 1913 Everett Concert Grand piano among its prized possessions and has hosted events as diverse as poetry readings and a product display of Yamaha motorcycles? Members will provide tours of this almost 130-year-old Michigan Historic Site and you will leave better-informed about this iconic South Haven landmark.

South Haven resident Barb Chartier Raudonis is known by her friends as the Monarch Mama and has been able to be a part of every stage of the monarch butterfly’s life, from caterpillar egg to the butterfly’s first flight. Learn about all the stages of the monarch’s life, the plants that help support them, and their biggest threats.
Listen to entertainment by David Veenstra while you enjoy your delicious lunch served at the Senior Center. The post-lunch program will feature author Jennifer Murphy, followed the Annual Meeting. This promised to be a delightful event!
David Veenstra has been a singer songwriter for decades. His band, Invisible Ink, received national airplay. In recent years, he performed in a duo, “In Harmony” with Rev. Ron VanLente. Since Ron’s passing in July of 2020, he has been performing solo at South Haven Farm Market, private parties, and events with quality originals and over 230 cover songs. Membership meeting will follow entertainment.
Jennifer Murphy, former Scott Club member, will describe her new novel Scarlet in Blue, set in South Haven in 1968 and Chicago in 2014. Narrated in three voices, Scarlet in Blue is a beautifully written psychological mystery from its shocking first sentence to its unexpected twist at the end. A starred review in Booklist states: “Murphy dazzles… This novel will leave readers questioning what is real and how mental health can affect generations in kaleidoscopic ways.” Jennifer and her husband now live in Houston where she misses Lake Michigan every day. Black River Books will have her books available at the luncheon and the author will autograph upon request. Her two novels are available online also.
