April 18: The Cut – 2022 Michigan Notable Book

Author John Wemlinger is a retired US Army Colonel who served 27 years on active duty. Since retiring he has authored five novels, the latest of which, The Cut, was named a 2022 Michigan Notable Book by the Library of Michigan. The Cut tells the David and Goliath story of a small group of disgruntled homesteaders in northern Michigan in 1871 that take on Big Lumber who is flooding out their small farms in order to operate a water wheel-driven sawmill. John will join the South Haven Scott Club to talk about that story as well as the why and the how of his writing it. He will also have copies of all his books for signing. August 16: “Boyz on Bikez”

What was it like to grow up in a small West Michigan port town in the 50’s and 60’s? Roger Horton will recount his boyhood adventures with friends from days gone by and will share photos of their various escapades. Roger has been an active member of the local community for many years and is noted as the resident storyteller. Take a trip back in time and enjoy Roger’s stories of the “Boyz on Bikez”.

August 2: Reading Circle to Center for Arts and Culture-History of the South Haven Scott Club

The South Haven Scott Club, one of South Haven’s oldest organizations, traces its origins to 1883 when it was formed as a reading circle. The organization has been providing cultural events and programs to the community ever since 1893 in its Michigan Historic Site. Come and learn about the rich history of the Scott Club from Anna Krajecki, long time member and Past-President, and enjoy a tour of this South Haven landmark.

July 19: Idlewild Resort – A Respite from Racism

Established in 1912, Idlewild welcomed African Americans with no restrictions at a time when segregation was rampant. The small town eventually became one of the most popular African American resorts in the Midwest. This presentation is journey back to the decades when Idlewild offered rest, relaxation, and a respite from racism. Morris O Thomas, retired Professor of Geography, Environment and Spatial Sciences at Michigan State University will present his program via Zoom. Scott Club will be open for participating in this program.

July 5: Cinderella Stories You’ve Never Heard-A Family Story Hour

How can a story that is one of the oldest and most told in the history of humanity be mis-understood by almost everyone to be limited to only one animated cartoon which came out in 1950? Please join us to discover several of the most charming versions that are not widely known or told. Several rare versions will be told and discussed by Dr. Pamela Cook Miller, a performing member of the Jonesborough Storytellers’ Guild and founder of the Storytelling Resource Center in Jonesborough Tennessee.

What Michigan Historic Site has beautiful Austrian stained-glass windows but is not a church, counts a 1913 Everett Concert Grand piano among its prized possessions and has hosted events as diverse as poetry readings and a product display of Yamaha motorcycles? Come and see for yourself at the Scott Club Open House. Members will provide tours of this almost 130-year-old Michigan Historic Site and you will leave better-informed about this iconic South Haven landmark.

June 22: Macrame Plant Hanger – make and take class

Following enthusiastic response to their March 15, 2022 program on the History of Macrame, Evergreen Macrame will return to the South Haven Scott Club for a macrame plant hangar class. $30 fee includes materials and a plant! RSVP (required) to info@scottclub.org by June 21st.

June 21: Monarch Butterflies in Action

South Haven resident Barb Chartier Raudonis is known by her friends as the Monarch Mama and has been able to be a part of every stage of the monarch butterfly’s life, from caterpillar egg to the butterfly’s first flight. Learn about all the stages of the monarch’s life, the plants that help support them, and their biggest threats.
