Past Concert Series

Sunday, May 15 at 3:00 pm, Jazz Concert featuring pianist Rufus Ferguson

The final concert of the 2021-2022 Scott Club Concert Series will feature Kalamazoo-based jazz artist, Rufus Ferguson. Join us in person (limited capacity – reservations required)** or virtually for this free concert showcasing the Everett concert grand piano!

Rufus Ferguson is a multi-instrumentalist and educator who earned degrees from Western Michigan University under the mentorship of Jeremy Siskind and Matthew Fries in jazz piano. In his professional career, Rufus actively shares the stage with award nominated and winning artists such as Dwight Adams, Robert Hurst, Rodney Whitaker, Ali Jackson, The Temptations, Earnest Pugh, David Wilford and many more.”

This concert series is a collaboration between the South Haven Scott Club and Foundry Hall, and is made possible in part by generous grant funding from The Greater South Haven Area Community Foundation and Entergy Palisades Power Plant.

Saturday, April 23 at 7:00 pm, Classical Concert featuring pianist Connor Austell

The Scott Club Concert Series showcasing the Everett concert grand piano begins its spring series with a South Haven native, Connor Austell. His performance will include classical works by Leoš Janáček, Alberto Ginastera, Frederic Rzewski, and Thomas Wiggins. Join us in person (limited capacity – reservations required)** or virtually for this free concert showcasing the Everett concert grand piano!

Pianist Connor Austell received his musical education at the University of Michigan and at Grand Valley State University under the tutelage of Arthur Greene, Sookkyung Cho, and Giuseppe Lupis. He studied chamber music with Katherine Collier, Helen Marlais, and Pablo Mahave-Veglia, and has participated in masterclasses with world-class artists such as Jonathan Biss and Martin Katz. Connor is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Georgia, Athens, where he studies piano with David Fung and teaches courses in music theory.

Sunday, November 21, 2021 at 3:00pm Jazz Concert featuring Grayson Nye and John Hébert

Grayson Nye and John Hébert

The Scott Club Concert Series continues on November 21st with a performance by Grayson Nye and John Hébert. Join us in person (limited capacity – reservations required)** or virtually for this free concert showcasing the Everett concert grand piano!

Kalamazoo pianist Grayson Nye is a member of the Last Gasp Collective, Fake Baseball, Saxquatch and the Bridge Band, and recently has joined a band fronted by The Lasso. While he performs in many groups, Grayson’s background is in jazz. He will be joined by bassist John Hébert, who is currently a part of the Fred Hersch Trio. The two will play a mix of jazz standards as well as originals in a unique duo setting between piano and bass.

This concert, which is a collaboration between the South Haven Scott Club and Foundry Hall, is sponsored in part by grant funding from The Greater South Haven Area Community Foundation and Entergy Palisades Power Plant.

Sun, May 2, 2021 at 2pm EDT Aleksandra Vojcic and Melissa Grey Duo

The final spring concert of the series will be held on May 2nd with a performance by the Aleksandra Vojcic and Melissa Grey Duo. Join us for this free virtual concert showcasing the Everett concert grand piano and two wonderful Michigan musicians!

Dr. Aleksandra Vojčić (piano), and Melissa-Kay Grey (flute) have performed several times over the past two years in Kerrytown Concert House, for Michigan Medicine, as well as a special opportunity to perform and present a masterclass in Kingston, Jamaica in 2019. The international program included contemporary music by Shulamit Ran as well as the premiere of JacQues iN JorOpo by Colombian composer, Carmen Marulanda.

Sun, March 28, 2021 at 2pm EDT Latin Jazz featuring Jane K

The South Haven Scott Club and Foundry Hall present another concert in the ongoing Scott Club Concert Series showcasing the Everett concert grand piano at the Scott Club. Jane K (Evgeniya Kozhevnikova), a Kalamazoo based pianist, will be joined by Neal Lensenmayer on bass. Together they will present a program of Jane’s original compositions. Most of the tunes were featured on “Tango Avenue”, Jane’s debut album released in December 2020 with the support of the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo. Both Jane and Neal are WMU alumni. They started playing together while in a jazz combo at Western. You can learn more about Jane and hear some of her work on her website: www.janekmusic.com

Sunday, November 15, 2020 at 3pm Ivan Akansiima trio

Ivan Akansiima is a multi-instrumentalist, Christian faith worship leader, Jazz musician, composer, arranger, producer, instructor, and researcher from Uganda East Africa. His music is rooted in Ugandan folk music traditions, Jazz, Gospel, Classical, Caribbean, Afro fusion music etc. He has performed professionally for over 15 years in 40 countries, including a national music tour across 50 states in USA and Canada in 2010. Ivan is an area resident and popular contributor to our local music scene who will be accompanied by a bassist and drummer and provide a not-to-be-missed concert.

Sunday, October 18, 2020 at 3pm Matthew Ball, boogie woogie pianist [rescheduled from March 15, 2020]

Kicking off the 2020-2021 Scott Club Concert Series is pianist, singer, songwriter, Matthew Ball, also known as The Boogie Woogie Kid. He is the attorney turned musician with now over 4.5 million YouTube views! Matthew is established as a leading entertainer in Detroit and Michigan and also is a national touring artist who consistently performs to rave reviews. Enjoy a fun-filled program of favorites from the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s to start the series in great style.

Tina Gortner, Keith Geiman and David Bernard

Collaborative pianist Tina Gortner will perform classical pieces accompanied by trumpeters Keith Geiman and David Bernard. Tina, Keith and David are based in Kalamazoo and are all educators as well as seasoned and versatile performers. This trio will be a special winter treat.
